These parts are internal; the vagina meets the external organs at the vulva, which includes the labia, clitoris, and urethra. The vagina is attached to the uterus through the cervix, while the uterus is attached to the ovaries via the fallopian tubes. At certain intervals, the ovaries release an ovum, which passes through the fallopian tube into the uterus. If, in this transit, it meets with sperm, the sperm penetrates and merges with the egg, fertilizing it.

Female External Genital Organs
The female reproductive system provides several functions. The ovaries produce the egg cells, called the ova or oocytes. The oocytes are then transported to the fallopian tube where fertilization by a sperm may occur. The fertilized egg then moves to the uterus, where the uterine lining has thickened in response to the normal hormones of the reproductive cycle.

The female reproductive tract is all located within the pelvis. It is made up of the vulva, the vagina, the cervix, the uterus, the fallopian tubes and the ovaries. These organs are supported in the pelvis by ligaments. The vulva refers to the external female genitalia. The vagina is a distensible muscular tube which connects the uterus and cervix to the external vaginal orifice.
