Female or male: the classification of homosexuality and gender
Homosexuality: I. Sexual Behavior of the Female Homosexual | JAMA Psychiatry | JAMA Network
Studies of any design and subject area that had at least two WSW participants were included. Of identified studies, 56 studies from 22 countries met inclusion criteria. Overall, many WSW reported risky sexual behaviors, including sex with men, men who have sex with men MSM , and HIV-infected partners; transactional sex; and substance abuse. F emale-to-female sexual contact has long been assumed to comprise low-risk behavior for contracting sexually transmitted infections STIs , including HIV-1 infection. Research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender LGBT health has been an emerging area of study since the HIV epidemic began in the s. However, the pace of this research has not been equal across countries with different economic statuses, particularly low- and middle-income countries LMICs , nor has it been equal among LGBT subgroups.

To ascertain the validity of hormonal theories of human homosexuality, which are based on animal research, this article reviews psychoendocrine data on lesbian and transsexual women. Sex hormone levels were found to be normal in the majority of homosexual women, but about a third of the subjects studied had elevated androgen levels. In women with prenatal androgen excess, heterosexuality appears to be more frequent than bisexuality, and exclusive homosexuality is rare. Two recent reports suggest abnormalities of the neuroendocrine regulation of LH secretion in female transsexuals.
WE WERE interested in the study of homosexuality in order to describe systematically its developmental and behavioral aspects. In this particular paper, the first of a series, we will describe and discuss the sexual behavior of the female homosexual. For any individual subject, her behavior was studied systematically from childhood to her present age with careful attention to the chronological development of the behavior during her earlier years and the changes in time during the adult years. The majority of the studies on homosexuality have been on male homosexuals. There have been fewer studies on female homosexuals and systematic studies on a series of women are notable for their paucity.
